Born 6th January 1883 in the town of Bsharri in Northern Mount Lebanon. From a poor family, he received no formal schooling, but was taught the Bible and Lebanese Arabic from priests. In June 1895 his mother emigrated with her children to America.
At 15 he returned to his homeland to study, returning to Boston in 1902.
His best-known work is The Prophet, published in 1923, it is one of the best selling books of the 20th century in the United States. It has also been made into a movie.
Kahlil Gibran died in New York on 10th April 1931 and fulfilling his wishes was buried in Lebanon.
