Henry was born in Concord Massachusetts on 12th July 1817. He graduated Harvard College in 1837 and was a teacher for a while.
He became a protege and lived with his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson for two years, working as a hanyman.
Emerson helped him to get some poems and essays published.
In 1845 he built a small house on land owned by Emerson on the shore of Walden Pond to have a quiet place to study nature and write. Moving back several years later he spent the rest of his life writing, lecturing and working in his fathers factory.
He died on 6th May 1862 from tuberculosis aged only 44. Emerson said at his funeral: “The country knows not yet, or in the least part, how great a son it has lost… His soul was made for the noblest society; he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of this world, wherever there is knowledge, wherever the is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home.”
